Amey's BSI Success

PRESS RELEASE

17 October 2003

Amey plc, the business services and transportation infrastructure specialist, today announced it has achieved certification to both ISO 9001:2000 for quality management systems and ISO 14001 for environmental management across the Group. The standards demonstrate Amey's ability to effectively manage customer and supplier relationships and its impact on the environment.

Each of the business units, Highways, Rail, Fleet Services and Business Services has systematically worked towards individual certification over the past two years and the achievement of certification by Amey plc reflecting the linkage of the business units within the Group has been the culmination of this process. This places Amey amongst the top support services providers for its demonstration of commitment to continual improvement.

Within Business Services most of its contracts are now certificated to both standards with further assessments scheduled for next month and full certification expected by the end of the year.

Amey Highways has also achieved certification to OHSAS 18001 for safety management systems and practice and now operates a fully integrated management system. This is a strategy that is now likely to be followed by the other business units.

Mel Ewell, chief executive of the Amey Group, says: "These awards confirm our commitment to achieving excellence in everything we do, and are part of what we see as an ongoing process of measurement and improvement. "

BSI's Management Systems' managing director, Neil Hannah, comments: "The implementation of these integrated management systems are designed to make businesses continually more responsive to customer needs, stimulating innovation and more responsible towards employees well being.

"Amey is a large and complex group of businesses, employing some 7,000 people at more than 100 sites across the UK, so it's all the more impressive that the company has made such progress. We congratulate them."
